What is nutrition counselling?
Nutrition counselling is a collaborative process where you work with a Registered Dietitian to improve your eating habits, manage health conditions, and support your overall well-being.
What should I expect in my first session?
During your first session, you and your dietitian will discuss:
Your health history
Current eating habits
Lifestyle and routine
Nutrition concerns and goals
Together, you will develop a personalized plan that fits your needs and preferences.
Is something wrong with me if I see a dietitian?
Many people seek support from a dietitian. It does not mean that anything is wrong with you. Nutrition counselling can be helpful whether you are managing a health condition or simply looking to improve your overall health.
How do I know if nutrition counselling is right for me?
Nutrition counselling may be helpful if you:
Feel confused about what to eat especially if managing several chronic diseases
Have liver or kidney disease
Looking to prevent a chronic disease
Have digestive issues such as bloating or discomfort
Are managing a condition like diabetes or high cholesterol
Struggle with emotional or disordered eating
Want to improve your relationship with food
You do not need to wait until something feels “serious” to benefit from support.
How long does nutrition counselling last?
There is no set length of time for nutrition counselling. Some individuals benefit from a few sessions, while others prefer ongoing support.
You and your dietitian will decide what best suits your goals. You are always welcome to return for additional sessions as needed.
We recommend at least one follow-up session or buying a package so that you can see dietary improvements after a few sessions. Remember long lasting changes take time.
What kinds of concerns can a dietitian help with?
Nutrition counselling can support a wide range of concerns, including:
Weight management
Kidney health (chronic kidney disease, kidney stones, protein in urine)
Liver disease (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, fibrosis, cirrhosis, wilson’s disease)
Digestive health (IBS, bloating, reflux)
Diabetes and blood sugar control
Heart health (cholesterol, stroke/heart attack prevention, blood pressure)
Emotional eating
Women’s health (menopause, pregnancy, pcos, prenatal nutrition, fertility)
Picky eating and infant nutrition
General healthy eating (osteoporosis, vegetarianism, meeting nutrient needs, gaining weight)
Is nutrition counselling guaranteed to work?
There is no guarantee that nutrition counselling will work, as every individual is different.
Recommendations are based on evidence and experience, but outcomes depend on many factors, including consistency and lifestyle.
Your relationship with your dietitian and your ability to apply strategies outside of sessions are important factors in success.
Do you offer virtual counselling in Ontario?
Yes, we offer virtual nutrition counselling for individuals living in Ontario.
How does virtual counselling work?
Virtual counselling is similar to in-person sessions, but takes place from the comfort of your home.
You will receive a secure, confidential video link prior to your appointment. Sessions typically last 30 to 60 minutes.
If technical issues arise, a phone session may be used as a backup.
Is virtual counselling as effective as in-person sessions?
Research suggests that virtual counselling can be just as effective as in-person sessions for many individuals.
Virtual sessions offer convenience and accessibility, while in-person sessions may allow for more direct interaction. We can help you decide what works best for you.
Do you offer in-person appointments?
No. Please contact us for current options.
Will the dietitian give me a meal plan?
Your dietitian may provide meal ideas, structure, or guidance. In some cases, a meal plan can be created if appropriate.
The focus is on building sustainable habits rather than strict or restrictive plans.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask that you provide at least 24 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.
Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice may be subject to a fee.
What is your no-show policy?
If you miss a scheduled appointment without notice, you may be charged the full session fee.
How long will I have to wait for an appointment?
We aim to offer appointments as soon as possible. Depending on availability, you may be able to book within the same week.
