What is Grief
Grief is something that most of us will experience at least once in our lifetimes, if not more. Grief is what we feel when we experience loss, whether that is the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or losing a job. Making sense of loss and how your life changes after loss is challenging. When someone is experiencing grief, they may go through a spectrum of emotions from sadness to anger to confusion. Everyone experiences their grief in their own way and has their own process of making sense of their loss and how to continue living.
Grief can be more complex at times if it accompanied by trauma or other difficult life circumstances. Grief can also be a trigger for depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Some individual may already be struggling with their mental health when they experience a loss and it can reinforce negative beliefs they hold about themselves or the world.
Signs You May Benefit from Therapy
It is possible that you may benefit from grief counselling if you are struggling to function after the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or losing a job. If this loss has increased your anxiety and made it difficult for you to interact with the world. Or if the loss was complicated by trauma.
How Therapy Can Help
Having the support of a therapist during grief can help in processing and working through the loss. Therapy won’t take away the pain of the loss but it can help you work through the complicated emotions and thoughts that arise while you are going through your grief journey. EMDR and Interpersonal Psychotherapy have both been found to be helpful in supporting individuals who have experienced loss. As has supportive counselling.
